6TH PRAGUE CONFERENCE ON SOUTHEAST ASIAN STUDIES

entitled

POWER AND STRATEGIES OF POLITICAL ORDER IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

To be held on October 14th, 2016 in Prague, Czechia

Southeast Asia as a region and a cultural area has been renowned for its unique ancient concepts of authority and statehood, such as the classical mandala-type Indianized kingdom, the dewaraja, the kerajaan, or the kraton. While some of these phenomena have become less relevant over time, other notions have not only survived to this day but, having undergone a necessary adaptation, they are still present and, to a various degree, determine socio-political patterns of contemporary societies of Southeast Asia. Other models have sprung up as a result of the interaction of local concepts with newly arrived religions, such as Islam and Christianity, the onset of colonial times, the post-colonial era, and various recent societal developments such as urbanization and industrialization.

In line with this, we therefore welcome the submission of a wide array of inter-disciplinary papers on both historical concepts of kingship, datu-ship and other traditional forms of authority as well as more modern modes and strategies of gaining power and maintaining political order, both formal and informal. We also encourage applicants to bring forth ideas of legitimacy and religio-political aspects of power. Papers studying forms such as nepotism, bossism, warlordism and oligarchic practices are welcome, too. Given the variegated character of Southeast Asia´s political landscape and ruling traditions, we anticipate a multitude of fascinating panel and paper proposals. It is our hope that an edited volume or a special issue of our Institute´s scholarly journal Archiv Orientalni (http://aror.orient.cas.cz/) will come out of this promising academic event.

Deadlines:

The deadline for the submission for panels and paper abstracts: May 31, 2016

Notification of accepted panels and papers: June 30, 2016

The deadline for final registration for the conference: September 15, 2016
