Roundtable on “Reconciliation with the Past and Transitional Justice: Comparing Taiwan and Czechia”

Taiwan and the Czech Republic share a legacy of troubled past. Although their transitions to democracy have been successful in many respects, in both countries the reflection of historical experience remains complicated.

In Taiwan, many unresolved issues of the past are being addressed only after Tsai Ing-wen became president in 2016 and initiated a new approach to transitional justice. The speakers will discuss how controversial historical issues are reflected by collective memory and public debate in Taiwan, and how the country’s past affects its present social and political trends. The discussion will then compare the reconciliation with the past in Taiwan and in the Czech Republic.
